In the interest of disclosure you might want to let people know that you make your living using SAS and that you are the author of a book to be published by SAS cf. http://support.sas.com/publishing/authors/tuchman.html

Basically, I think programming languages should be copyright-able. Of course, society may benefit if the language is community sourced after a period of time, but that is at the discretion of the writers of the language, not an obligation.

The grammar of a language is a pretty clearly defined thing, should be copyright-able, and there would be a pretty clear test of whether something was a copy.

I also feel that the functionality of a program shouldn't be protected. Yes, it's a complex issue, but we could try. Legal precedent cannot be changed, but new laws could be written.

Until then, what incentive is there to develop software at all?

What it means is that no piece of software is safe. Why develop anything when your customers can just spend time with your system and then re-implement it.

I don't think this type of plagiarism constitutes "innovation" or "fair competition."

There are plenty of legitimate, truly innovative alternatives to SAS in the marketplace.

Software isn't like generic drugs where the public has an automatic right to a piece of intellectual property just because it has been in the market for a long time.

I think the standard for what is allowed to be copied is too loose and needs to be changed.

Sorry for the confusion. Sometimes it's too quick. I didn't think about the fact that I was running FlashBlock in FF 3.6, I also thought I could run a downloaded binary of FF 4 but the launch script would still run 3.6 and I didn't check that I was actually running 4 and not 3.6.

I've now installed version 4 through a PPA:
sudo add-apt-repository ppa:ubuntu-mozilla-daily/ppa && sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install firefox-4.0 (it will show in the menu as the mine sweeper browser)

And for good measure I've also turned off flashblock in it even though it shouldn't really matter. This setup works.

Sorry, I see
<code>
#
</code>

When starting, and when I go to localhost:10000 I get “Can’t receive from a closed channel.” in the repl which was expected so the server seems to be running properly anyway.

I'm getting "The websocket is not open!" in both FF 3.6 and 4 when opening as a file.

I see this when I start the server: #

When I output socket.readyState I see 0.

Any ideas on what the problem could be?
